Abstract
If the roots of western religions lay in the extinct religious traditions of the Near East and the Mediterranean littoral, their content and ultimate form owe much to another ancient—yet still living—faith. During their exile in Babylon in the sixth century bce,* the Jewish people came into close contact with a religion known as Zoroastrianism, whose ideas and tenets were to influence greatly not only Judaism, but Christianity and Islam as well.
