Abstract

The object of this chapter is to place the Monarchy in its contemporary context. Before doing so, however, some knowledge of the past is necessary, because in order to be able to understand and appreciate the position of the Monarchy within today’s constitutional framework, some knowledge of its history and consequent development is essential. In Britain continuity and change have gone hand-in-hand. Continuity has been the dominant feature of British constitutional development, yet this has not meant the absence of change as age-old institutions have evolved and adapted to fulfil purposes often very different from those for which they were originally created. As a result there is often a striking contrast between the theory and practice of the British constitution. Nowhere is this more true than in the case of the Monarchy.
