Crudely, this book is an attempt to apply to nursing ethics the approach to bioethics which is set out by Beauchamp and Childress in their Principles of Biomedical Ethics (1989, 1994). It should be stressed, though, that there are differences between the claims set out by Beauchamp and Childress and claims made in this book. Further, at least one of these differences is quite fundamental in that in their book they claim to reject any hierarchical ordering of principles (1989, p. 125), but in the present text it is tentatively claimed that the principle of respect for autonomy is ‘weightier’, so to speak, than other moral principles.
