Summary

Review of the manifold aspects and activities involved in the period between Admiralty approval for the production of a particular type of Naval radar, and its ultimate introduction to Fleet service. This link formed a vital lynch-pin in the overall radar programme for the Royal Navy throughout World War 2.

A review is presented of the gestation of the Admiralty’s shipfitting programme; materiel procurement; ship-fitting, in all its ramifications; sea trials; and shore-based maintenance. Also described is the impact of the development of entirely new operational systems, in which the radar sensor was the core element; on the work load under wartime pressures, at many levels within industry, the Royal Dockyards and commercial shipyards, and on Admiralty personnel, both civilian and uniformed.
