Some aspects of labour ward culture

The Social Meaning of Midwifery

Abstract

This section describes in some detail the environment where the study took place. As previously explained the study was conducted in two maternity units. In order to preserve the anonymity of both units the descriptions presented and the incidences described are drawn from field notes written after visits to both hospitals. This ‘fictitious’ maternity unit, a combination of Hospital B and Hospital C, I have called the Valley Maternity Hospital.
