Abstract

The reasons for providing heating systems in buildings are threefold:

  • to provide ideal thermal comfort conditions under which the occupants can live and work in a safe and efficient manner;

  • to ensure that the products being used, stored or manufactured in the space are protected from the cold and damp;

  • to protect the building fabric from the effects of cold weather.

The aim of this chapter is to introduce the various controllable factors relating to thermal comfort, the well-being of the occupants within the space, and the associated heating plant required to maintain the chosen design conditions.
