Chapter
Part of the Macmillan Computer Science Series book series (COMPSS)

Abstract

In this chapter, and the next, we attempt to answer the questions:
  • What is an operating system?

  • What does it do?

  • Why do we need one?

By answering these questions we hope to give the reader an idea of what we are trying to achieve when we discuss, in later chapters, how operating systems are constructed.
