Abstract

The setting up of the European Community in 1957 spearheaded a series of policies affecting the rights of women in paid employment. These policies have had the effect of coordinating national legislation and standardising policy throughout the EC. At times this has been at a higher level than exists in any member state, which has been forced, often against its will, to monitor its own legislation and where necessary to introduce reforms that bring it in line with EC law.
