Economics of the Public Sector

Abstract

Economics of the public sector lies in the field of study of political economy. In An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations (1776), which came to be regarded as the first book on economics as a subject, Adam Smith wrote: Political economy, considered as a branch of the science of a statesman or legislator, proposes two distinct objects: first to provide a plentiful revenue or subsistence for the people, or more properly to enable them to provide such revenue or subsistence for themselves; and secondly to supply the state … with revenue sufficient for the public services.
