Sub-contractors must supply goods, materials and workmanship which are in accordance with the express and implied terms of their sub-contracts. If they fail to do so, they will be in breach of contract and the main contractor will be entitled to recover damages for any loss he suffers as a result. That basic principle sounds (and is) perfectly straightforward, but it has given rise to some complex contractual rules regarding liability for defects in the subcontract works.
