Summary
This paper identifies seventeen roles involved in the development of a knowledge-based system from the initial idea through to the handover to the users of a working system. The ways in which these roles interact is discussed and the ways in which the attitudes of the people change with time explored. It reflects the experience gained in developing a variety of systems but more particularly Diploma, a system to support repair and overhaul in an aerospace environment. Having highlighted some potential pitfalls and suggested how they may be avoided, this paper will contribute to the successful development, implementation and acceptance of knowledge-based systems in manufacturing industry.
