Summary

Total manufacturing systems normally comprise several sub-systems which are frequently not well integrated. Whilst much attention is usually given to the design of the technical sub-systems, far less attention is paid to the design of the organizational and behaviourial sub-systems. It is also likely that insufficient attention is paid to their integration. This empirically based paper descriptively analyses these problems and points the way to suggested improvements in the design and implementation of future total manufacturing systems.
