Abstract
This chapter covers the analysis phase of interface design in which information is gathered about users and the jobs they do. This work should be carried out and integrated with mainstream systems analysis, e.g. tasks in SSADM (Longworth and Nicholls, 1987). The steps involved are analysis of user characteristics; analysis of the user’s job (called task analysis); and domain analysis, which investigates the system environment and the users’ perceptions of it as they relate to their task. This information is then synthesised to design the user interface which supports the users’ task.
