Abstract
In Chapter 1 it was shown that foreign manufacturing enterprises employed just over 775 000 people in the UK economy in 1990, although employment within foreign owned manufacturing industry had fallen by nearly a quarter of a million in the decade to 1989 (IDS, 1990). This reflected a fall in the employment provided by US subsidiaries in the UK which has more than offset any growth in manufacturing employment provided by investments from the EC and Far East. In 1989 employment within foreign owned manufacturing industry in the UK was at its lowest levels since the early 1970s. Employment levels in foreign manufacturing however recovered substantially (by around 50 000) in 1990.
