Abstract
Many people find the cost of going to see a solicitor and of being represented in court by either a solicitor or a barrister far beyond their means. Initially, after the 1939–45 War, the government con-sidered introducing a legal aid scheme similar to the National Health Service which would have assisted anyone needing to go to law. However, the cost of such a scheme could not reasonably have been sup-ported by the taxpayer.
