Austria: Solutions in a Unique Political Environment

  • Chapter
Economics and Politics of Transition

Abstract

Austria is a small country of about 40,000 square miles and 7.6 millions inhabitants. The Danube basin is the historic centre of Austria of whose area more than 60 per cent is covered by the Alps (more than Switzerland’s share). It is also a land-locked country like Switzerland, Czechoslovakia and Hungary, situated in the heart of Europe. Because of this central location, Austria is Europe’s transit country par excellence.
