Abstract
The term health care tends to make people think of hospitals and surgeries, doctors and nurses. Yet most health care is provided not by professionals, but by relatives and friends. Relatives and friends are usually the first to be consulted when someone feels unwell. The doctors come second. A lot of basic nursing is not in fact done by nurses, but by untrained women in their roles as mothers, partners and daughters.
