The care studies: introductory notes

  • Chapter
The Riehl Interaction Model in Action

Abstract

Six very different care studies are laid out here to help you to interpret Riehl’s model and examine its usefulness in contrasting clinical care settings. We won’t pretend that the nurses have taken a uniform approach, or that all care has been one hundred per cent successful. Instead, we argue that authentic care (warts and all) is creative, not invariably successful, but worthwhile despite this, as long as we learn important lessons from it. These then are not cardboard cut out patients or situations, but representations of nursing reality. We trust that they will ring familiar bells with you as you read through them and consider the associated self-check questions and review exercises.
