Abstract
Riehl acknowledges that the interpretation of theory into practice is through a structured approach to care planning, delivery and review. British nurses best recognise this as the nursing process. Riehl-Sisca (1989) suggests the use of a problem-solving approach as outlined by Stevens (1984):‘The process is initiated when a problem is encountered. Secondly, there is as much discussion as necessary among the patient, family and nurse to identify the problem and possible solutions. Finally, and most importantly, the correct diagnosis of the problem must be determined’.
