Abstract

There was one visitor to Canning Place whose example and personality aroused an admiration and affection which were immediate and lasting. This was E. M. Forster. Although he had a perching-place in Brunswick Square and seemed to be on good terms with that group of friends and acquaintances whose similarities of social origin, outlook, interest, and habit, to say nothing of early influences at Cambridge, had caused them to be spoken of as ‘Bloomsbury’, he never seemed to me to be quite one of them. I saw him, and see him, as an independent.
