I first met William Plomer, John Morris and E. M. Forster in Ackerley’s flat. I think Joe had convoked them all to give me the once-over, for in those days I was even more of a curiosity than I am now. They were all reserved at first, but Forster and Morris soon loosened up. However, William remained almost completely silent, and what I remember best is his immobility.…
