Abstract

In the postwar years West Germany experienced rapid economic growth and currently stands as the world’s third largest economy with a Gross National Product of DEM 2500 billion. In 1945 the Central Government of Germany was freed from its debts which amounted to DEM 380 billion. As a consequence there was no major public sector debt until the late 1960s and until the mid 1970s the state was a net creditor to the private sector.
