Abstract

1801 In March 1801, Dr. Aylward, Organist of St. George’s Chapel, Windsor, and Musical Professor of Gresham College, died. This happened on a Friday. William Clark (whose nickname in the Musical Profession was O Be joyful), a man I had recommended to Mr. Bates as a Tenor Chorus at the Ancient Concert, when I quitted that situation, was attending at a Rehearsal on the Monday Morning following, and heard the news of the Doctor’s death. Out of Gratitude, thinking that the Situation might be acceptable to me, he determined to inform me immediately of it, and left a Note on the Monday Evening to give me intelligence of the event. The next Morning I declared myself a Candidate for the Musical Professorship of Gresham College. The Election is vested in the Gresham Committee of the City of London only; and the salary is £100.0.0. per annum, paid at the Chamberlain’s office at Guildhall.
