Varieties of the British Mission Experience

The story of the British Mission to Los Alamos involves more than simply a tale of Anglo-American cooperation and scientific breakthroughs. It is also a story of scientists who returned to England to forge the main outlines of the postwar nuclear world. Although they shared a similar Los Alamos experience, they held far from identical views on the major issues of the day. In fact, the British scientists eventually fanned across the entire political spectrum: from the bulwarks of the Anglo-Australian nuclear establishment to Soviet agent, with the majority falling somewhere in between.
