Abstract

At the end of this chapter, you should be able to:

  1. 1

    describe and assess the findings from research into gender role development.;

  2. 2

    evaluate alternative explanations of the origins of gender role behaviour;

  3. 3

    discuss the findings from studies of the emergence of a sense of self in young children;

  4. 4

    evaluate research into the development of self-esteem in children, and consider some practical implications of research findings;

  5. 5

    understand what is meant by achievement-motivation and learned helplessness, and assess the practical implications of research into these two constructs.
