Speech and music combined: an overview

Abstract

In my oral presentation at the Wenner-Gren Symposium “Music, language, speech and brain”, I tried to give an idea of the diversity of combinations of speech and music: I played numerous sound examples, scanning different countries and different times, from ancient to contemporary music. Such scanning is bound to be biased and rushed: yet I thought it would be useful to play the examples rather than merely discuss them. In this article, I shall only make some points illustrated by the examples.
