Hypothalamic galanin in relation to feeding behavior and endocrine systems

  • Chapter
Galanin

Part of the book series: Wenner-Gren Center International Symposium Series ((WGS))

Abstract

Since its discovery in 1983 (Tatemoto et al., 1983), galanin (GAL) has been found to have a variety of physiological and endocrine effects in the periphery (Rokaeus, 1987). It has also been shown to have high concentrations in the brain and to be particularly rich within the hypothalamus where GAL is believed to control basic behavioral as well as physiological processes. This review will focus on the actions of GAL within this structure and will describe results supporting a role for hypothalamic GAL in the control of feeding behavior and also in the release of hormones that modulate both food intake and the metabolism of nutrients ingested. In addition, it will review evidence for the coexistence of hypothalamic GAL with the catecholamines, norepinephrine (NE) and dopamine (DA), and for possible interactions of GAL with these classical neurotransmitters in the control of energy balance.
