Abstract

This ancient chant was once used by sentries patrolling the dawn terraces of a fortified pa. In this sesquicentennial year I would like to invoke it at the dawning of a new era, the next 150 years since the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi of 6 February 1840.

Kia hiwa ra! Kia hiwa ra! Kia hiwa ra i tenei tuku!

Kia hiwa ra i tera tuku! Kia hiwa ra! Kia hiwa ra!

Be alert! Be watchful! Be alert on this terrace!

Be alert on that terrace! Be wakeful! Be watchful!
