Abstract

Chapter 6 provided examples of simple column, beam and slab construction. Like steel, reinforced concrete is an extremely versatile material that has been used for many and varied structures. It is particularly suitable for multi-storey work, such as flats, offices, car parks, hospitals and schools; for bridges, particularly the hundreds associated with motorways; water retaining structures and even cathedrals. There have been troubles with materials and with bad detailing, particularly with precast concrete structures. These are outside the scope of this book.
