Abstract

Chapter 4 provided examples of simple column and beam construction, used in the framework of buildings such flats, offices and schools. Steel is a very versatile material that has been used to produce some of the most famous structures in the world — the Forth Bridge in Scotland, the Humber Bridge in England, the Howrah Bridge in India, the Eiffei Tower in France, the Hancock Center in the USA, the Sydney Bridge in Australia — the list is endless. It is used for factories, warehouses, hangars, gantries, transmission, oil rigs and so on.
