Abstract

A file is a structure in which data can be stored, and is usually associated with disks. This allows a program to store information so that it can be retrieved on a subsequent occasion. The actual handling of the disks is done by the operating system of the computer, and this varies between machines. However, in general the user does not have to worry particularly, but just uses some standard facilities provided in the library.
