Summary
Just-in-Time manufacturing requires the production of smaller and smaller batches, to respond quickly to customer demand and to reduce inventories and their associated costs.
To minimise waste, each item must be produced in the exact quantity needed and at the right time. A pull production system is able to achieve these results and fast production scheduling is of great support if it is able to eliminate the waiting time of parts queuing in front of machine tools.
The Authors have been interested in scheduling and sequencing in job-shop and in flow-shop environments. The algorithm considered is able to optimise several measures of performance of N jobs on M machines with a short computation time. In particular the algorithm can evaluate and minimise the time spent by parts waiting for the next operation on a new machine. This technique considers pairs of jobs, thus eliminating a great amount of the computer time needed to forecast the optimal sequence and is able to annul the waiting time of pieces.
