The Application of the Finite Elements Method to the Structural Design of a Five Axis Low Cost Industrial Robot

  • Chapter
Proceedings of the Twenty-Ninth International Matador Conference

Summary

This paper shows how the finite elements method can be applied with success to the structural dimensioning (static and dynamic) of articulated structures such as robots. This is exemplified by an initial analysis for the design optimization of a low cost, all welded aluminium construction, five axis industrial robot.

In addition, an analysis was carried out to show the contribution of each part (base, intermediate and top arms) to the overall displacement of the tool centre point (T.C.P.). This analysis allowed to identify the weakest part of the articulated structure and to concentrate on it further optimization work.

Furthermore a limited study of the relationship between the static and dynamic behaviour of the robot and the position of its T.C.P. was carried out.
