Abstract
Peru is a diverse country. Large in size (at 1 285 000sq.km, it is over twice the size of France), it has a population of only about 22 million people. It has been said, with a little exaggeration, that ‘Peru is a beggar sitting on a bench of gold’. Certainly the country possesses a considerable array of valuable natural resources, but the excessively difficult terrain and great problems of exploitation and communication have hindered their development.
