Abstract

Buddhism arose in the sixth century BC in the area of the Himalayan Kingdom of Nepal in Northern India. It took its name from the title ‘Buddha’ (The Enlightened) given to its founder. Over the centuries it spread far beyond India in various forms, and adherents of Buddhism are widely found in SriLanka, the Indo-Chinese peninsula, China, Japan and Korea.
