Abstract
If you got up one morning to find a letter on your doormat from a close friend, you would not have to open it to guess at its style. You would know in advance that it would not read like a letter from a lawyer, the Sun front page or a dictionary of philosophy. Each type of document has its own writing style, chosen most deliberately by its authors.
