Abstract

These are particularly challenging times to be active in the world financial markets. Thirty five years ago most banks operated in very narrow markets both in terms of products offered and geographic area covered. Basically banks accepted deposits and made loans. Globalisation of markets, securitisation, the emergence of derivative instruments and twenty-four hour trading, and other features now taken for granted were not even dreamt of by most financial participants.
