Abstract

The objectives of this chapter are to teach members of the trauma team:

  • relevant anatomy of the chest wall and thoracic contents;

  • basic physiology of ventilation, diffusion and perfusion;

  • recognition and primary treatment of six immediately life-threatening thoracic conditions;

  • recognition and primary treatment of six potentially life-threatening thoracic conditions;

  • recognition and primary treatment of neck wounds;

  • principles of definitive thoracic trauma care.
