Abstract

Making moral or ethical decisions is always difficult. In recent years, committees have sat for months discussing whether research should be permitted on human embryos at all, or whether it should, perhaps, be permitted but only up to 14 days of embryonic existence. When it was debated in Parliament, the Prime Minister and an Archbishop, both with a scientific background, voted in favour of allowing such experimentation up to 14 days. There have been similar debates about whether abortion should be allowed up to 18 weeks, or 21 weeks, or even 28 weeks. Again, opinion has been divided.
