Abstract
Panels are sometimes far too big. For senior posts, it is felt a necessary ritual to ask everyone who could possibly have an interest to attend, perhaps to ask one question each (their pet question). Such interviews gather little in the way of evidence. I met someone who was ‘interviewed’ by all members of a local authority. Senior posts in new colleges of nurse education, for instance, may well require many political interests to be represented, and therefore necessitate large panels undertaking ritual questioning.
