Abstract

Computer Integrated Manufacture (CIM) is the concept of a totally automated factory in which all the elements of manufacture previously described in this book are controlled by computer in an integrated manner. Although the cost of such a totally automated system is still unacceptably high, some companies have made considerable steps toward CIM with the goal of gaining a competitive advantage in the world market place. It should be noted at this stage that it is not just the use of computers that is significant; rather it is the skill with which the company’s operations are planned and integrated together with the judicious application of computers that brings success. No single aspect of manufacturing is a panacea or guarantee of success, especially computerisation; it is the manner in which the company operates as a homogeneous unit that is important.
