Abstract

What was so outrageous about Judge James Pickles imprisoning 19-year-old Tracey Scott at the end of 1989? Why was there such an outcry before the Appeal Court released her? She had pleaded guilty to helping shoplifters in the systematic theft of £4000 worth of goods from the store where she worked on the checkout. Along with two others, she simply failed to ring up the purchases on the tills through which the thieves passed.
