Abstract
Mrs Thatcher has been Prime Minister for more than half the life-time of anyone aged 17 years or less. This means that for the great majority of the age group she has, in effect, always been Prime Minister. Since we tend to see as normal the state of affairs into which we are socialised, it follows that the next generation of voters may find it hard to conceive of a male Prime Minister, a Labour Prime Minister, or even of one who is not Mrs Thatcher. Her pre-eminence is made the greater by her personal style of leadership, demonstrated in her performance at the Conservative Party conference each year.
