Abstract
There has been much talk in the last ten years of a ‘lost generation’ of young people, of hundreds of thousands being thrown on the scrap-heap of unemployment, and of the despair and rejection that is experienced by the victims. Students today, however, find themselves in a very different situation, with advertisements in the press reminding employers that young trainees are about to become a scarce resource, and higher education institutions recognising that they must recruit a larger proportion of the age-group if they are to maintain their intake.
