Abstract

From time to time, a single individual makes such a telling challenge to the common-sense view of some aspect of social life that anyone who reads their work has their understanding transformed. Thomas McKeown, who died on 13 June 1988 made such a contribution. Trained as a physiologist, he was the first holder of the chair of social medicine at Birmingham University, and an international figure in the science of epidemiology.
