What Exactly is work?

Abstract

As the monthly unemployment figures continue their downward trend, the headlines tell us that there are fewer people ‘out of work’. Leaving aside the question of how far the unemployment statistics have been manipulated to produce this impression, the idea of being ‘in work’ or ‘out of work’ is worth a closer look.
