Abstract

Data on forest cover and rates of forest loss in Laos are in short supply. There are few primary sources, and those that are available on a national level are somewhat generalised. The best map available, a 1:1 million scale map from 1987, indicates that there is 67,780 sq. km of closed forest, with a further 56,820 sq. km of degraded formations (roughly 29 and 25 per cent of land area, respectively).
