Abstract

A small area of the great Malesian tropical rain forests extends into Australia. The flora and fauna have some Malesian affinities, but include many unique species. The forests occur as small patches mainly close to the coast of Queensland. Despite their limited extent much of the original area has survived. Disturbance of the forest, including selective felling for high-quality timber, has been stopped by federal government decree and the forests have been listed as a World Heritage area.
