Anorexia Nervosa: Displacing Universalities and Replacing Gender

  • Chapter
The Psychology of Women’s Health and Health Care

Abstract

Anorexia nervosa, once considered an extremely rare condition, has in the last 15 or 20 years developed rapidly to the point that it now is on the verge of becoming an epidemic illness (Bruch, 1978). The condition has been described from psychodynamic, family interactional, behavioural physiological, and socio-cultural perspectives. While each perspective has merits, no single approach adequately describes the multidimensional aspects of anorexia nervosa. (Sheppy et al., 1988, p. 373)
