Abstract

In my teens I used to talk to Maud Gonne. She lived about a quarter of a mile away in Roebuck House and occasionally took a walk along our road, dressed in black from head to foot of her tall, bent but graceful body, her eyes large and luminous with a hint of mesmeric qualities, her voice elegantly modulated. She admired our cats, she liked flowers, she seemed to drift along, just a little tired, just a little detached from the life around her, yet recording what she saw with clarity, apprehending its details effortlessly.
